Preheating of scraps removes oils and volatile materals from the charge which brings about a dramatic reduction in smoke development when the melting furnace is loaded.

Supplying preheated material to the melting furnace also produces and improvement in the melting rate of the furnace which will be linked to the preheating temperature. Where this leis between 300 and 500c 0 ,the melting rate will increase by 15 to 20%.

Any drop of moisture contained in the charge material could cause liquid metal to spurt out of the furnace or in an extreme case cause an explosion. This constitutes a danger to the operators and could damage the furnace and adjacent equipment . This being the case , the foremost reason for preheating of scraps.
